Human Factor Reason in Internet Scam Proliferation

[October 24, 2004] The increase of computing devices means convenience to every end-user.  However, the security concern is a challenge, with threats coming from email such as virus and spam for almost hundred percent.

According to Andy Lake of MessageLab, director and channels for Asia Pacific, the first enabler of threats is the propagation of spam and viruses in the online world. Secondly, organized crimes like Phishing – the latest Internet scam which attackers are serious to make money by spoofing or using social engineering tactic in getting personal and financial information of the victim.

Anthony Lim, security chapter chairman of Singapore IT Federation said the human factor aid this kind of trick to succeed. Then, I remember Kevin Mitnick in his book, The Art of Deception when he quoted Albert Einstein.  He said, “There are only two infinite things in this world: first is the universe and second is human stupidity – I am not even sure with the first one.”

Mr. Lim advice not to buy or entertain spammers, for doing so will just encourage them more.

For this reason, Mr. Nitin Acharekar, Network Security Research head of Frost and Sullivan, added, the dilemma of enterprises now are becoming more complex with attackers getting more sophisticated, service providers protecting their own business interest and the government is not equipped and still reactive with this kind of scams.

He also said that technology alone will not solve security problems.  Organizations should analyze what should be done by setting objectives, assessing the changes in the business environment and evaluate new solutions and new enablers.
